Challenged by Amazon, reMarkable unveils new ‘Paper Pro’ color tablet

After four years of development, reMarkable unveiled the reMarkable Paper Pro, its next-generation writing tablet, featuring its first color display and adjustable embedded front-light, and promising an improved writing feel.

The company, based in Oslo, Norway, has been facing growing competition from rivals including Amazon, which unveiled its competitor, the Kindle Scribe, two years ago. With the front light, the new device matches one of the key features of the Scribe, while going beyond the Amazon tablet with the debut of a color display.

“Some companies, they put out new products every year just to put out the new product,” said Magnus Wanberg, the reMarkable founder, in a video presentation Wednesday morning unveiling the new paper tablet. “We wanted the next step for the paper tablet to be meaningful and significant.”

The reMarkable Paper Pro starts at $579 with a basic marker, with additional charges for a marker with a built-in eraser, and other accessories.

The new device is 10.8 x 7.8 inches, with an 11.8-inch display, compared with 9.7 x 7.4 inches for the existing reMarkable 2, which has a 10.3-inch black-and-white display and starts at $399 with a basic marker included.

By comparison, Amazon’s Kindle Scribe sells for $340 with a basic marker. It has a 10.2-inch display, and the device footprint is 9 inches x 7.7 inches.

Executives for reMarkable cite the benefits of using the tablet to focus without the distractions inherent to other digital devices. The company also offers apps for smartphones and computers to sync content to other devices.

ReMarkable’s tablets support reading PDFs and e-books, but the company doesn’t offer a built-in e-book store, which remains a major advantage for Amazon, with its Kindle Store available on the Kindle Scribe.
